We join all Ohioans of good will in mourning the loss of George Voinovich.

As US Senator, Governor, Mayor, and Ohio State Representative, George Voinovich was a longstanding, passionate partner with the Jewish communities of Ohio.

We remember his commitment to the cause of Soviet Jewry as well how instrumental he was in strengthening the Ohio-Israel trade nexus, including leading the state's first economic trade mission to Israel in 1993. The Negev Foundation proudly is home to the Voinovich Agricultural Research Center, to this day connecting Ohio's largest industry with cutting edge Israeli developments.  Jewish National Fund honors the family's legacy with the Molly Agnes Voinovich Memorial Forest just south of Haifa.

As the prime champion of the Cleveland Scholarship Program, he helped our state's most needy students get a hand up and thus spurred Ohio to expand educational opportunity statewide. Ohio's Jewish day schools - and their students - benefit from these programs thanks to the vision of George Voinovich.

He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Janet, their family, and indeed, all Ohioans.
